Gather a few things
Large paper and intact, age-rated chunky crayons.
Let’s play
- A grown-up draws a big umbrella or a rain cloud.
- Say a soft pitter-patter and make a few marks.
- Invite your toddler to choose slow drops, fast drops, or one enormous pretend splash.
- Take turns making sounds while the other person draws.
A little learning to notice
Notice fast and slow rhythms and different kinds of marks.
Keep a little memory
Record your child’s favorite rain sound or name for the picture.
Make it work for your child
Use hand gestures instead of sounds, or let your child draw quietly. The picture does not have to resemble rain.
